Membership of the Society
It was partially through the generosity of Members that JVL managed to raise funds to acquire and develop the estate when it was founded. As of June 2021, JVL had 620 Members. It costs £1 to buy a share, plus a £4 administration fee. No Member may hold more than 200 shares. No matter how many shares one acquires, you only get one vote per shareholding. Shares may be solely or jointly held. A joint shareholding only gets one vote so couples may wish to consider buying a share each. As the shares do not pay a dividend, buying more than one share is effectively a donation to JVL. Once Membership is granted, Members may stand for election to the Management Committee, and after meeting further eligibility criteria, may apply to join our Waiting List for housing. Consultation In 2020, JVL consulted its Members and residents of the Village on who should be allowed to be a Member in future. This consultation resulted from the concerns of residents that over the years, it had come to be that a larger proportion of Members were now living outside the village than within, and therefore could vote on matters that affect the lives of those living on the Estate without any direct consequence for themselves. The result of the Consultation can be found here. Eligibility To be eligible for Membership, you must be living on JVL's estate or land formerly forming part of JVL's estate for at least 1 year leading up to the date of your application, and we encourage those living on the Estate to apply. JVL may use its discretion to evaluate applications from residents who have not yet lived in the village for a year. JVL would usually decline applications from non-residents unless in very exceptional circumstances. Apply If you wish to become a member and are eligible for Membership, please fill in the application form and send it to us. You'll find our contact details here, and on the application form. Friends of Jordans Scheme
Overview The Friends of Jordans Scheme has been created to enable those who are interested in the Village to keep in touch with what is going on, and to participate in the community. The Friends of Jordans Scheme is open to anyone with such an interest; Members of the Society are automatically enrolled into the Scheme. Jordans Village was founded in 1919 by a group of Friends interested in creating a “Social and Industrial experiment” so as to give “those engaged therein scope for the growth of character, self-expression, and high standards of individual workmanship”. While part of their original objective – to acquire an estate and to construct the residential properties upon it – was achieved many years ago, the community spirit and care for this beautiful estate is something that continues to be nurtured to this day. As well the residential estate, Jordans Village also comprises Crutches Woods, Manor Farm Fields, an Orchard, and of course its centrepiece – the Village Green, which is set within a designated Conservation Area. Adjacent to the Village are the Quaker Meeting House and burial ground, Old Jordans, and the Mayflower Barn. There is also a shop, a Village Hall, and a primary school on the estate. Friends of Jordans will be welcome to participate in events and volunteering opportunities which help to create such a wonderful co-operative community spirit in the historic Quaker Village of Jordans.
